Snap

I see no use at all in Snap, the annoying service that pops up a postage-stamp sized, way too high compressed, and thus completely useless screenshot of the linked-to websites when the mouse resides on a link. It only does so on websites which include Snap’s script, when this would be so much better suited as a browser extension that can either be disabled (or just not be installed) or that works on all websites.

This annoying website of mine, probably shows a pop-up message when viewed with Firefox under Windows, whining about missing fonts nobody needs, cares for, nor is in any way likely to download, just because some suspicious-looking pop-up said so. And I’m tremendously pleased to announce, that it also does so on Snap’s screenshot-cluster, which then looks like this:

Spectacular. I wonder, though, why the window has no title-bar… They seem to use Windows, or some Redmond-themed linux without a window-manager…

CeBIT!

See the multitouchscreen live at CeBIT from March 4. to 9. (Tickets are amazingly cheap on the last two days!)
The device can be touched at the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research-Exhibition (Hall 9, Stand B40, Public Sector Parc) which features two Jugend forscht projects, the other is Florian Schnös’ SmartCam, which is really cool. (Despite that I will still fantasize about all the people coming just for the multitouchscreen)

One of our neighbors will be the Federal Police, so I hope to be able to witness the CCCeBIT-action firsthand :)

So.

Hier war so lange Funkstille, weil ich in der chronologisch korrekten Reihenfolge über alles berichten wollte.

Seit dem letzten Eintrag ist einiges passiert (wie man sich denken kann), z.B. ein Praktikum im Alfred-Wegener-Institut (wenn ich die Dateien wiederfinde gibt es ein paar schöne Bilder von hässlichen Tsunamis), der Tag der Talente (alle Teilnehmer wurden als Hochbegabte bezeichnet, zwischendurch gab es was zu essen oder tendenziell unpassende Workshops — Fotos), ein fürchterlich langweiliges, aber zum Glück nur dreitägiges, Herumhängen bei einem Mittelständischen Weltkonzern. Danach mal wieder eine Woche Schule, dann statt Kursfahrt Besuch der Platzierten des Jugend-forscht Bundeswettbewerbs bei Der Kanzlerin (ziemlich lustig).

Danach ein paar weitere Wochen Schule und schließlich ein höchst angenehmer, und nur durch eine vergessene Badehose getrübter Aufenthalt im Schlosshotel Elmau zum Jugenddialog des Freundeskreises Elmau mit größtenteils interessanten Rednern und nur 19 Leuten + 4 Organisatoren, interessante Atmosphäre.

Vielleicht gibt es zu irgendeinem dieser Vorkommnisse noch einen Eintrag, falls mir Bilder in die Hände fallen…

Flying flowers!

The clutter-flowers example looked so nice that I just had to free it from the (still useless, in my opinion) clutter-library, add some basic physics and a nice bloom-effect. This is the result (looks better in reality!)

The bloom-effect applies a box-blur (with radius 60) to the part of the image with a higher brightness than 0.7 and adds this to the original image after it was put through the function:

f(x) = 1.155 x - 0.655 x2 + 0.184 x3 - 0.023 x4 + 0.001 x5

Instead of using the common fake-bloom technique, this is demo renders to a GL_FLOAT_RGBA32_NV framebuffer that is not clamped to [0;1] as usual. For very bright areas, the [0;4]-range is also too small, but an even greater one would require real tone-mapping as used for HDR-imagery.

The code will be released through my multitouch-project as soon as it runs properly on the screen (which requires the screen to run properly again itself)

Das iBook Keyboard

I left the icons for brightness- and volume-control though, as well as some other symbols like enter and tab.

The sandpaper used was super fine (600, wet), but it still managed to accidentally remove the F-nipple…

It was half-inspired by this post showing how easy it was to remove and reset the keys.

Endlich wieder eine Herausforderung!

Da will man mal schnell was löschen, und zack, fällt man vom Stuhl und voll auf die Enter-Taste während gerade

$ sudo rm -rf /

in der Zeile steht.

Oh und reiserfs ist ja auch noch so wunderbar schnell, bevor ich ^C drücken konnte war auch schon /dev/.static/ weg. Ging natürlich alphabetisch, also fehlt jetzt halt /bin (gut, ist besser als /home wobei ich nicht nachprüfen kann ob es überhaupt noch existiert denn ls gibts auch nicht mehr).

Und jetzt?

Aha, Foren empfehlen Live-CDs. Aber gibt es die denn mit LUKS und für mein PowerPC-iBook? Mir fällt zumindest keine ein.

Die Lösung: Die Platte im Externe-Firewire-Festplatten-Modus (T beim Start drücken) an einem anderen System mounten. Die moderne Distribution sorgt für die Entschlüsselung und die gewünschte LVM-Partition lässt sich mounten.

Dann nur noch die wichtigsten Pakete manuell herunterladen, entpacken und ‘rüberkopieren — und es geht!

Hello, world!

I hate PHP.

And MySQL.

And most of the people using it.

This blog runs WordPress. And it’s quite a pain.

But until the revolution comes (which will be, according to my latest plans due in ca. 14 months), this will be it. My eyes hurt, I hope it’s that Web2.0-feeling inside me…
