Zweck der Übung ist offensichtlich, abgesehen davon, den Privatkühlschrank im Innenministerium öffnen zu können, den Abdruck möglichst weit zu verbreiten und so zu demonstrieren, wie sagenhaft hirnrissig es doch ist, ein derart offensichtliches Merkmal als Authentifizierungsmaßnahme zu verwenden.
Außerdem können wir jetzt endlich feststellen, wenn sie ihn durch einen Roboter ersetzen.

Maybe they rewrote nautilus in Python, but I’m too scared they did, so I won’t check.
On the plus side: metacity now acts as a composite manager, being much more resource-friendly than compiz, so those can be wasted otherwise. On pulseaudio for instance.
My frequently cursed but nonetheless constantly used rhythmbox segfaults because of some stupid — yeah — Python-plugin. And liferea just segfaults, but that’s nothing new, after the last three updates, the developers changed the name of the settings path (including the current version number. Don’t know what for, maybe it would be nice and usable otherwise…), thus it couldn’t find the old settings any more and of course crashed and burned.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute offers very detailed data about the international arms trade on their website. Using some shell scripts, sed and XSLT I converted some of it to the Google Earth KML-Format, resulting in this:

I thought, exploding
the countries off the surface, relatively to the amount of weapons they trade was a nice metaphor. But using a linear scale, the USA and Russia would be at moon-distance (which Google Earth does not display correctly, oddly) while most of the others would stick to the ground. Thus the logarithmic scale, still impressive. The spikes over the capitals are in linear scale, though.

Far more interesting, though is this other dataset, also from said site: it contains individual transactions, often with commentary, always with source and target country, the time and estimated worth
. Here the arcs represent individual transactions between two countries, their height shows the size. Thanks to Earth’s cool timeline feature, you can select a timespan between 1950 (where the data starts) and 2006, as, unfortunately, the view will become enormously cluttered…
Should I succeed to shrink the file and color the arcs according to countries, it too will be released.
Die CeBIT war beeindruckend, vor zwei Wochen. Ein nie abreißender Besucherstrom nahm 240 Visitenkarten, 2 LED-Leisten, sowie meinen Rucksack mit Laptop und Kamera mit. Die meisten waren relativ interessiert, zumindest empfand man es wohl als recht angenehm, vollkommen sinnlose Spielchen anfassen zu dürfen, ohne pausenlos von Verkäufern beschallt zu werden (obwohl ich irgendwie trotzdem durchgehend redete…).
Presseecho gab es auch in bescheidenen aber ausreichenden Dosen, namentlich vom Linux Magazin, die ich scheinbar mit meinen größenwahnsinnigen Multitouch-Compiz+MPX+Input-Redirection-Vereinigungsplänen beeindruckt habe (Fenster frei drehen!

, also eigentlich nur einer, und eigentlich auch kein A-Lister, zumindest kannte ich ihn zuvor noch nicht, was allerdings nichts heißen mag, waren zumindest in zwei Posts recht positiv gestimmt: Unter den wirklich massenhaft vorhandenen Multi-Touchscreens sei meines das sympathischste Modell

Und 3sat:neues war da! Es brauchte etwa sechs Anläufe, was, wie ich demnächst jedem erzählen werde, mein Fehler war, nachdem ich mit einem blöden Witz (hey, sie nannte mich Patrick
), Yve Fehring aus der fassung gebracht habe. Mehr oder weniger. Zumindest funktionierte zu diesem Zeitpunkt (es war Abend, tagsüber schwerste Bearbeitung durch Die Horde
) das Gerät nicht mehr wirklich gut, man musste relativ gewalttätig aufdrücken, aber irgendwie traute sie sich das nicht, jetzt scheint es also, als sei das Tracking mies…
